The Skies of Velaris
The Kingdom of Petrassa is a collection of small islands ruled by the human king Leonas. A young kingdom, only about 200 years old, Petrassa is nevertheless just as widespread as some of its older counterparts in the Floating Isles due to the strong cultural emphasis placed upon exploration. Over the course of its existence, the Petrassan kingdom has expanded beyond the dozen or so islets within its own archipelago to include over 30 individual islands. While none of these holdings are as large as those commonly held by states within the Floating Isles, the total land area held by Petrassa rivals that of the principality of Alnoc.
Petrassa is wary of indebting itself to other nations, and will generally only enter trade agreements that are very favorable to its interests. Instead, the Petrassan government focuses on expanding its holdings of natural resources by claiming uninhabited territory for Petrassa. This is carried out through the Petrassan Scouting and Surveying Corps, an exploratory, non-combat branch of the Petrassan military. If the explorers encounter native tribes, they offer land rights, full citizenship, and financial compensation in order to absorb them into the kingdom. This has occasionally led to conflict, but the Petrassan government maintains a non-aggression policy to try to curb these events. While the scope of Petrassa’s current holdings is impressive, it is doubtful that they pose much real threat to other established nations, as most of these holdings contain little in the way of real resources.
